@thelonius sad thing is, most funeral directors don't even love or even respect the obituary as a piece of writing. i'm trying really hard to change that. and re: obit writers drinking, i like to refer to obits as "the whiskey of writing" because they are so beautifully concentrated when done well. (and that makes obit writers human distilleries!)
...and I thought that was a beautiful headline (so much so that I remember that phrase all these years later, well enough to search it). That made me start to notice the obituaries; when I read one about a man who had invented the singly-wrapped slice of cheese; I was hooked.
