(as is the case with Naomi Wolf, she may have been referring to Belfast, Maine, which was also undergoing a massive economic recession that required a pivot to tourism in the 80s to finally get out of, so the rugged natural environment she's touting would have been a bunch of out of work chicken farmers)
So, does she mean "the way it felt [wherever she was, presumably not Belfast] in the 1970s"?
Plus the age component. She went to college in 1980. I went a few years later, and yeah for sure in my mind the 1970s were calm, still, peaceful, restful, and natural because I was a latchkey kid with a stable home and school situation and didn't know anything else. I probably wouldn't have felt that way in Belfast, but I think it's easy to have those blinders on at that age in a lot of places.
@mrzarquon We don't have to figure her out, but it's also kinda stupid to assume that someone who was 8 years old in 1970 - and who grew up in San Francisco - is attempting an insightful analysis of 1970s Belfast.
It's also stupid all the way down, the reason this tweet got any attention at all in the UK (hence the assumption of Belfast / Troubles) is most likely due to the mention of 5G. There's been a rash of vandalism against the 5G towers due to conspiracies about 5G causes Covid:
"Belfast… does not yet have 5G". You mean like 95+% of the world and 99.9% of devices? Who the hell is already so wedded to 5G speeds that a visit to a city with mere total 4G coverage feels like some kind of time capsule trip to a pre-tech Eden?
FFS, I hope she's being sarcastic as well as stupid. But given who's speaking, I assume not.
