The vent stack that put our kitchen remodel a week behind

We knew with the house being old and (poorly) remodeled in the late 1970’s to expect some unwelcome surprises during our kitchen remodel. This vent stack was probably the most surprising, and caused the most delay to our expected timeline.

After giving in and covering the butchered sink side wall with drywall (https://mltshp.com/p/1MGIL), we went to install the first top corner cabinet…only to discover the stove side had enough of a bulge up top that the cabinet wouldn’t even rest on the ledger board. Cutting an inspection hole revealed an out-of-plumb vent stack for the neighboring bathroom (I was actually surprised to discover it was properly vented at all), which despite having a nice hollow wall to work in was pushing giants the kitchen drywall. No wonder the old cabinets were so wonky.

As firm believers in fixing things right, we took down all the drywall, fixed a few electrical issues found in the process (https://mltshp.com/p/1MKDR), added 1x3 firing strips to all the studs, and put up new drywall. The room is a little smaller and the wall still not really square or plumb, but they proved good enough to hang cabinets. #newkitchen

"Buy a fixer they said. You'll have such fun they said."
I can sympathise.

If it is in the way you may be able to replace it with a Studor Vent

@roonie What's annoying with this house is the old/original construction and materials are good, it's the 1970-80's updates where everything is just wrong.

@griffonvideo I'm not sure if they are code or not for a main vent stack here, but either way bumping the wall out 3/4" did the trick. I'll definitely be using one when I replumb the kitchen sink, currently it has an unvented S-trap.

@cwhartman I know what you mean.
Our house was built in the 1930's and someone reno'ed in the 70's, probably.
We did our own reno in 94/95 and the blokes who did the heavy lifting were laughing and crying on a regular basis, uncovering the horrors of the 70's.
