@owl China released a rather impressive AI app on the 20th of January that cost just $6 million to build within 2 years, and its open source. The code is on Github and the app downloads have crashed the servers.
Yesterday, NVidia lost half a trillion dollars of market value and overall, tech stocks dropped by more than one trillion dollars.
China used cheaper chips to work around the blocks and barriers put up by the US to prevent it from getting fancy AI chips and slowing down its competitiveness with US AI solutions.
Also the people who released the app are a hedge fund (or a VC) not a startup
Its called the whole US multigazillion energy eating AI stack into question.
And yes, the Chinese app uses less energy and resources
The timing is just so chef's kiss, just days after the announcement of a $500bn AI "hub", to rule the world, China says, Hey, we've already done that. Here, It's for everybody.
