Toronto life expectancy by neighbourhood

Other cities have been measuring this for a while, but I hadn't seen it before for Toronto.

The 12 year range of age is a bit shocking. Looking at the map though, it follows the socio-economic status of each neighbourhood pretty closely, so that's not a surprise.

The outlier at the high end is curious though. It's not the wealthiest neighbourhood, but the one with the greatest percentage of immigrants:

"The 'healthy immigrant effect' is one possible explanation for Yonge-Doris’s high life expectancy. Basically, for the first 10 or so years after someone moves to Canada, particularly in adulthood, their health tends to be better than someone who was born in Canada. There are a lot of theories for why this might be, but Pinto points to Canada’s rigorous points-based immigration process that 'selects for people with sufficient income, professional credentials, existing resources and so on.' The factors for which the government assigns high points—from education to wealth to professional accomplishments—are also indicators of good health."

Yonge-Doris is mostly wealthy immigrants.

I don't live in the worst neighbourhood, but we're pretty close to the bottom in Kennedy Park. It's a low economic opportunity neighbourhood, but I'm also sure the residue from building tens of thousands of tonnes of bombs at the old GECO works can't have helped

And don’t forget that every immigrant has to undergo a medical exam including a lung X-ray and full STD panel before acceptance to Canada. So the immigrant population is definitely healthier than average.
