Californian/Mississippian/Missourian is "(a)n" instead of "ian" because the i/a is already there. Contrast with Floridian/Carolinian where they drop the a and replace it with "ian" If it was "Floridan" or "Carolinan" then they would be teal as well.
New Yorkers are what you call people who live in New York City. If you live on Long Island, you're called a Long Islander unless you live in Brooklyn or Queens where you are a New Yorker. Every one else in New York is from up-state where you're identified by the town or city you're from, such as a buffalonian or a Binghamtonian or Syracusan.
@kokogiak Came here to say that. When I lived there (in the 1990s) I never once called or heard of "Massachusettsan". Masshole was good, as was "commonwealth resident" and of course, for special occasions, "that townie that I went to high school with."
@patd Usually "Mass resident" or "Mass native". "Masshole" only came into being after I left, and I kinda hate it because it's become a self-reinforcing rationale for people there to act like belligerent fuckoffs.
