Sensu

Last summer I bought a cheap sensu (folding fan) during an outdoor event. It turned out to be very useful, especially while waiting for the train in the summer. It easily fits in my pocket. It was really cheap: 500 yen (~$3 USD).

Later, I saw some nice ones that other people were carrying, and I asked a friend where he got his and he recommended a store in Kyoto. I went there a few weeks ago and bought the one in the top pic for 8,000 yen (~$50 USD).

The top pic shows the new one. The middle pic shows the cheap one on the left. The bottom pic shows the sleeve that came with the new one, the new one, and the cheap one on the right.

Now all you need is a handkerchief, and you're on your way to becoming a rakugo master. (Personally, I find the handkerchief even more useful than a fan, especially when eating out -- which is pretty much two or three times a day, in these parts).

@mikenmar I got a handkerchief pretty soon after learning that public restrooms often lack any means to dry your hands.

(I had to look up "rakugo.")
