January 24

A pixelated icon of a small computer: an all-in-one model with both a screen and a disk drive. The screen has a smiling face on it. This, of course, is Susan Kare's Happy Mac: the first thing you'd see after turning on your Mac in the 80s or 90s (well, second thing, if your machine didn't have a hard drive). The icon is white pixels on a black background. The pixels glow with a neon blaze of rainbow colors: the six colors of the classic Apple logo. The painting is signed "Chris Silverman". Thanks for everything, Mac team.

"On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you'll see why 1984 won't be like '1984.'"

my daughter wanted to pass along her compliments on this one in particular

@tonyb Oh thanks! Glad she liked it.

Just curious, does she remember the happy Mac icon from personal experience? I think a lot of people wouldn't recognize it today.

@csilverman that's the funny thing - she's 16 yrs old, so she completely missed this era. Also - she grew up with PCs rather than Macs so she is completely out of the loop in that regard. I'm 54 yrs old, so I'm very familiar with the happy mac, and my very first personal computer was the Powerbook 100 (!!!). But yeah, she said there was something about the glowing rainbow vibe of the colors in this image that really caught her eye, even though the old skool mac nostalgia went right over her head.

@tonyb Heh yeah, Apple's 80s aesthetic never stopped looking good. I wonder how people would react if they went back to their rainbow logo today. I think it would be a popular decision.
