Winter storm Jan 2026 update
@ardgedee I’m hopeful for both of us that safety and the ability to keep seeing the beauty in spite of the cold inconvenient reality is in our future!
@wombatman70 I'll probably be heading out later today and/or tomorrow to take some pics. We live near a highway overpass and I want to see what rush hour will look like. I'm expecting something like https://mltshp.com/p/XAQY
6 PM update: The NWS has greatly cut back the amount of freezing rain we should get tonight. Still a quarter inch-ish so very not-great but the extent of blackouts and other damage should be less than we've been anticipating.
Still making my plans for tomorrow on the assumption that we won't have power, but expecting if that happens the overall damage in the state should be less, meaning power should be restored faster.

@ardgedee spectacular news! Well… encouraging at least. Glad to hear it. Hoping you never lose power, and that if you do, it returns swiftly.
We wound up with only light icing here in Atlanta, well, in my part of it at least. It was a bit worse farther north. We never lost power, other than briefly, when a tree came down on the next street over. That started a fire, but 911 already knew about it when I reported it, and order was restored. This is good, very good, because I don't think Mom would have handled the cold and dark very well, especially for days on end.
@thelonius I’m SO glad to hear it wasn’t worse! Based on the fact that we didn’t lose power yesterday I was cautiously optimistic that my house would avoid losing power at all this storm, but the emergency text message sent out last night about the locations of the three warming centers in greater Nashville did keep a seed of doubt. Fortunately our power stayed on again last night and with a forecasted high comfortably above freezing the next three days, I’m hopeful that everything will get back to normal asap. Hopefully the same will be the case for you & yours!
Am glad to hear everyone here seems to have been okay. We got about 16" of snow up here but power stayed on for everyone which was just grand
I had forgotten that sleet sounds like glass beads falling. Very pretty noise.
There's supposed to be a lull in the action starting late morning before the storm gets real this evening. At that point it will be all freezing rain welding the sleet to the ground and gluing itself to trees and power lines. Not expecting to wake up with power tomorrow morning.
